Why are many hosting solutions providers not telling their customers that they are not able to move their business away from the hosted solution provider? The hosted solutions company uses the lack of technical knowledge as a way to sell them on a propriatary website solution that forces them to do business with them forever and does not tell them they cannot move away without loosing all of their major functions such as shopping cart or CMS. If you are a hosted solution you should be 100% up front with your customers and tell them ALL of the limitations you are offering them.

I agree, this type of behavior drives me crazy and at times I get angry at how sneaky some companies are about hiding this in the small text. Companies that try to hold customers hostage in this manner are not ethical, in my opinion.

That's why we always educate our prospective clients about how our websites ARE transferable. When you hire us, we'll include a backup utility so you can create a fully installable backup of your entire site whenever you wish - content, template, graphics, shopping cart, everything - and save it to your desktop or offsite storage location. If you ever want to bring your site somewhere else (and we hope you don't, but if you do...), you can install your entire site on another hosting provider and be up and running in under an hour.

We want clients to stay with us because they love the top-notch services we provide.. not because they "have to".
