How does a security system protect my business?

The biggest value of an office security system comes from round the clock central monitoring. Installed security devices continuously monitor the premises for any unauthorized entry and send a signal to the central monitoring system if an intrusion is detected. Within seconds, local law enforcement is alerted so that they can take send someone to the scene if necessary. All this happens without your intervention. In case of an emergency, you only need to worry about your safety and that of your employees.

Security system includes a number of devices like motion detectors, door and window contacts, and glass break sensors that trigger in case of an intrusion.  A signal is sent to the central monitoring system and a loud siren is triggered inside and outside the building. If the phone line is cut or power is lost before the intrusion, a reserve system takes over to prevent security system failure.

There is some additional equipment that can be installed to make the premises even more secure. Security systems are not difficult to operate. You and your employees do not need any special skills and can learn how to operate in less than an hour. Security system is armed or disarmed using a security keypad generally located at the entrance to the building. Security key pad also acts as an intercom so that monitoring service can verify your identity in case the alarm is accidently tripped. The main control panel is usually hidden from plain site and is located in a closet or a backroom.

How do I select a security systems vendor?

There are fewer than ten security systems companies that manufacture monitoring equipment. Installation and monitoring is handled by their licensed vendors. I would compare quotes from multiple security systems vendors and ask them to visit the premises for a risk assessment and to submit a proposal. If you have VoIP instead of POTS, do let them know. A monitoring system cannot work on VoIP.

Call their references and ask if they were satisfied with installation, training and monitoring.  Next, review the quotes. Make sure they cover details including setup, type of equipment, monitoring fees and warranties. Also check to see if there are any hidden fees. Some installers may lure you with very low installation price. For a fair comparison, calculate the total cost of ownership during the length of the contract. If the warranty is less than the life of the contract, ask if you can pay extra and buy longer warranty. For a small size business it would take about 1-2 days to design and install an affordable system.

How much does it cost to get a security system installation and monitoring ?

Installation and equipment charges vary wildly depending on the type of system. Standard monitoring fees is billed monthly. Additional fees may apply for services like fire monitoring, cellular backup or open and close schedule monitoring. Some vendors may allow you to spread the cost of equipment over the life of the contract. Typical contract is about three years but it can be shorter if you agree to higher monthly fees. Once the installation is complete, call your insurance company and ask them if they can provide a discount on insurance.
